After much research I found what has been causing my pagination issues. It turned out to be the following module mod_muscol_top_rated_albums which is at version 1.0 for the first release of Muscol.
Please have look at it and let me know if there's a workaround.
When this module is enabled, pagination on MC front page starts with 5 but only two artists are showing. When disabled pagination starts with joomla backend selection which is set to 10.
