The plugin gives you the ability to play music through the flash player on specific joomla music solutions (jms) pages as it puts the player in a predefined location. This gives the jms component basic playback.

The module allows you to put the player in any page and allows you to choose where to put it, typically in any place your template allows modules. It also handles playlist displays better. It also gives one a choice to do a popup player. This is great when you want the player to show up on more than just the jms pages.

Most people seem to use both the plugin and the module. I would suggest loading both and trying them out. Just make sure you get the ones that matches your joomla version. ie the ones that says 1.6 for the 1.6 and 1.7 joomla, and the ones that don't have the 1.6 for the joomla 1.5 version.
