I am not familiar with these components. Looking at your demo site they look interesting. They seem to be somewhat similar. Do most users that use these components use both of them, or just pick a single one? If just a single one, which do most people prefer? Is there a benefit of using one over the other or a benefit of using both of them together and if so what are the benefits?

0just a single one. I have both just for demo purposes
well, they are a bit different. form my point of view, JomSocial is more like a "Facebook" (make groups, make friends, see friend's activity stream, post messages, intall application...), while CB is more like just creating a community with a lot of details, but without the "activity stream" feature (you dont see what your "friends" do). actually, there's no friends dfeature directly implemented.
well, there's something similar, but its not like JomSocial
both components are highly powerful. probably are the two "biggest" components for joomla. and there are SO many plugins for them (specially CB, you have hundreds of them), that you can create real monsters with it.
also, FYI, JS is commercial while CB is non-commercial -
