What is SUBARTIST?

I'm translating language .com_muscol.ini on russian now.
And I can't understand the meaning of the term SUBARTIST: what his function?
Who is he: co-author or ...?

    it depends.. it could be co-author, yes. but it could be for example a band.. for example, if an album is by "Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band", you could use "Bruce Springsteen" as the artist and "The E Street Band" as a subartist.
